KFA worked collaboratively with this Anchorage, Alaska group to move their project from site control to a city comprehensive permit application in just a few months. We ran four weekend workshops focusing on site, ecological, common house, and unit programming and schematic design, culminating in a synthesis that brought all aspects together for the permit application (granted).

The site plan puts the common house at the junction between two distinct housing types. Ten units are located in an “atrium building” with homes flanking an enclosed pedestrian street, giving protected access to the sun-filled common house in all seasons. Other units are townhomes with ground floor access to front and back yards, spread sufficiently apart to get southern light into each home, even in the darkest months.
